Zhai Yongming was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in 1955. She is an outstanding contemporary Chinese poet. She graduated from Chengdu Institute of Telecommunications Engineering (now the University of Electronic Science and Technology) in 1980 and lived abroad after resigning from a physics research institute. She began to publish poetry works in 1981. In 1984, her collection of poems Woman shocked the literary world with its unique and strange language and strong female standpoint. In 1998, she opened the “White Night” bar culture salon in Chengdu, and planned and organized a series of literary, artistic and folk video activities. Her representative works include more than 10 collections of poems and essays such as Woman, Above All Roses, New York and West of New York. Zhai Yongming was selected as “China’s 50 Charm” in 2005 and “China’s Top Ten Female Poets” in 2010. In 2007, she won the “Zhongkun International Poetry Award·A Award”; in 2011, she won the Italian Ceppo Pistoia International Literature Award. The chairman of the award jury called Zhai Yongming “one of the greatest poets in the world today.”
